I grew up a few houses away from Jack on Stuart Street. I remember him washing his car on beautiful summer days. He always called me "Dawn dolls", a popular toy back in the day. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, and I send my condolences to his family and friends.

To the Vanasco family,
Wishing you peace and comfort during this period of grief. Jack’s time in this world was far too short, but his impact was immeasurable, and his legacy will live on through the lives he touched. Jack was a terrific teammate and friend at Wagner, and on many occasions thereafter - all with fond memories.
The attached picture exemplifies his presence – always with a smile (back page of the NY Daily News, circa 1973 – tryout for the World Hockey Association New York Raiders/Golden Knights @ Sky Rink in New York City).

The world needs more people like Jack. He was a wonderful person. Always pleasant, kind, humorous and thoughtful of others. I will miss you and all your stories of your travels, swimming off the shore, your ice hockey adventures, and your beloved dad, wife and dog. You were full of life and brought joy to everyone who knew you. My heart brakes to hear about your passing but you will never be forgotten for all the light you brought into this world! You cared deeply for others which was evident while working with the NYCHH COVID Contact Tracing. I will miss you my friend but you will always be in my heart and memories. Rest in peace my dear friend Martina Hunsicker.
Diane, I am deeply saddened and am here if you ever need to talk. My thought and prayers are you and dad.

Coaching for St Edmunds all those years I always smiled when I saw Jack was doing our game….
It had nothing to do with the game, I had to do with looking forward to the hand shake, the smile, and the deep voice saying “Hello Coach, how’s things?”
He had a special way about him and knew how to make you at ease and show you what was really important.
The world will miss him, not just the hockey world!!
RIP Jack.. Heaven is a much better place now!

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jack. I did not know Jack that well, but I knew him for over 30 years from my time on the ice with the Fordham Rams, men's league in the tristate area as an opponent and the subject of his officiating, and his regular appearance at the annual Fordham Alumni game. There was always a familiarity about him, and his friendliness was contagious. It was always a pleasure to see him and he will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace "Wagner".

Jack Joseph Vanasco, a wonderful son-in-law who married my daughter, Diane and soon became my “son”. He was truly the perfect partner, and together they brought much joy into our lives. Since, luckily for me, they lived not too far away, I could always call on him for help with my shopping, gardening, and lovely trips, etc. He was always there for us following my dear husband’s passing. I love you Jack, thank you for the very fond memories and all you did for me.

Jack and I met when we were teenagers playing in the House League in Coney Island and have been friends ever since. We joked about ours being the longest relationship I ever had. We always had so much fun on and off our skates. Who knew at that time that we were making lifelong memories! I’ll miss your great storytelling, your sense of humor, all your texts and calls, your love, but most of all, I’ll miss you Pal. It was an honor and a privilege to have skated with you Jackie “Elbows” and to have been your lifelong friend. I love you and you will always have a special place in my heart. Rest easy Jack. Heaven is in for a real treat!

Gary and are were so saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. What a great guy. We both first met Jack when he was playing on our beloved Wagner College Ice Hockey team. In one of his early games we faced Fordham University. The game was broadcast on Fordham radio and I was interviewed. Like it was yesterday, I remember answering the question about Jack’s impact on our team “He’s big, he’s strong and he’s fast.” What we didn’t know about him then and learned later…he was also a really, really good guy, humble and with a heart of gold. Many years later, Gary had the privilege of seeing Jack ref at high school hockey games and knew how well respected he was in that role. It was wonderful catching up with him and his lovely wife at our reunion a few years ago. His loss leaves a hole in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.

Jack was always at the rink while I was growing up playing at Aviator. I played there since it opened. He was officiating all of my games from youth hockey through high school and men’s league. Not only was everyone happy to see him but we were also excited because he didn’t call a lot of penalties. It was always a treat running into Jack and listening to a story of his. He had a positive impact on everyone he met at the rinks. May he rest in peace

I can still see in my mind’s eye as a kid Jack skating in Marine Park JHS school yard with his hair blowing (we didn’t wear helmets back then). He was much bigger than most of us with a nasty slap shot. It was my pleasure to meet up with him in our adult years and skate together again as referees. He was old school calling a game and we had plenty of laughs talking about it afterwards. Here’s to Jack” The Legend “ Vanasco. You will be missed my friend.

I am so so sorry for your loss. Jack was not only a great hockey player (before my time with Fordham) but a great official and a GREAT gentleman. I go back 39 years and I'm proud to call him a friend. Jack was a part of the fabric that is the MCHC. As both a player at Wagner and an official for more than 35 years, he had an impact on the game with his presence, his smile and his larger-than-life personality. On behalf of both Fordham Hockey and the MCHC, we mourn your loss and pray for his soul.
