Obituary of Joseph A. Gencarelli Sr.
With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Joseph A. Gencarelli, Sr., who departed from this world at the age of 59. Joseph passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories.
Joseph is now reunited with his parents, the late Robert J. Gencarelli and Barbara Gencarelli, in the embrace of heaven. He is survived by his devoted sons, Joseph A. Gencarelli, Jr. and Nicholas J. Gencarelli, who were a constant source of pride and joy for him.
In his journey through life, Joseph found love once again with his fiancée, Sheila Carey, and he embraced the role of a caring step-father to her children, Michael (Deanna) Carey and Kristina Carey. Together, they formed a blended family filled with love and support.
Joseph leaves behind his siblings, Esther (John) Aponte, Barbara Ann (Frank) Stella, and Robert (Joy) Gencarelli, who will forever cherish the memories of their brother. He is also survived by his nephews and niece, John, Stephen, Michael, Charlotte, and Benjamin, who will cherish the memories of their uncle.
A passionate sports enthusiast, Joseph's heart belonged to the New York Islanders, and he reveled in the excitement of ice hockey. His love for Italian soccer, particularly the Napoli team, added an extra layer of joy to his life. Beyond his personal interests, Joseph generously gave his time as a volunteer firefighter, displaying a deep commitment to serving his community.
An active member of the Knights of Columbus, specifically Columbus Council #126, Joseph was a steadfast pillar of his community. Known for his sociable nature, he was a friend to everyone he encountered. Joseph's magnetic personality and genuine kindness endeared him to a wide circle of friends. His roots ran deep, having grown up on Avenue U, where he forged lifelong friendships lasting over 40 plus years. He considered these friends to be his brothers, and their bond was unbreakable.
Joseph's love extended to his cherished companions, his dog Lucky and his bird Paulie, who provided him with companionship and comfort.
As we bid farewell to Joseph A. Gencarelli, Sr., let us remember the warmth of his smile, the kindness in his heart, and the enduring impact he had on the lives of those around him. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
The visitation for Joseph A. Gencarelli, Sr. will be held at Marine Park Funeral Home on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 10:00 AM - the family will be gathering at the funeral home by 9:00 AM. The Committal Service will immediately follow the Funeral Mass at Resurrection Cemetery, in Staten Island.
