Obituary of Herbert A. Higgins

Herbert A. Higgins, “Herbie” to his family and friends passed peacefully on March 15th at the good age of 97.

Herbert was born in Brooklyn on October 1, 1926 to James and Laura (nee Johnson). He was a devoted and loving husband to the late Dorothy (nee Mullarkey). He leaves behind his nine adoring children, Dennis (Josephine) O’Neill, Mary Monica (Kevin) Mercurio, Dorothy (Frank) Schuhmann, Ann (Glenn) Suss, Eileen (Sean) O’Brien, Daniel (Paula), Therese, Bernadette (Joe) Walas and Patrick (Anna). He was also a wonderful and fun-loving grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of 14. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Penny O’Neill and son-in-law Anthony Abbate, also by his sisters, Mary, Lilian & Laura and brothers, James, John and Frankie. He is survived by his brother, Bobby.

Herbie led a life of service by joining the Navy during WWII and then became a member of the NYPD for 41 years before retiring as a First Grade Detective in 1989.

He was an avid sports fan who watched every Met and Jet game and never forgave the Dodgers for leaving Brooklyn. He was also an accomplished athlete. Besides baseball and football, he boxed for the NYPD in many tournaments, and at the age of 55, he trained for and began running marathons. He loved listening to traditional Irish and country music and enjoyed his trips to Atlantic City.

A lifelong parishioner of Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, he was a man of great faith who attended mass and said the rosary daily, He knew the location of every church in the city. He discreetly attended to parishioners in need and was known for his generosity. He was kindhearted to everyone, quick to smile and share a laugh.

Most important Herbie was a devoted husband and dedicated father, who always found time for each of his children despite working two or more jobs. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his loving family.

Herbie lived well, loved well and was well loved. His passing has broken the hearts of many, but they, his family and friends find solace in knowing that he is now in the company of his wife, Dorothy, together forever in Heaven.
