Obituary of James S. Cooney
James S. Cooney, age 77, of Brooklyn, entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 21, 2024. James was born on February 9, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late James and Catherine (Flanagan) Cooney.
A true patriot, James served his country with honor in the Navy from June 12, 1967, to November 13, 1968, earning the National Defense Service Medal. His dedication to service continued as a Coast Guard reservist for many years.
James’ life was marked by a profound commitment to protecting and serving his community. He began his illustrious career with the NYPD for 4 years before joining the FDNY, where he spent 25 years. Starting at Engine 281 - Hook & Ladder 147, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and retired from Engine 254. James was admired by his colleagues for his bravery, leadership, and unwavering dedication.
Devoted husband of 51 years to Janice B. (Carmody) Cooney, a love story that was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. Loving father to James S. Cooney (Erin), Michael J. Cooney (Erin), and Keri GaNun (Tim). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, James, Timmy, Regan, Keira, Brendan, Matthew, Brigid, and Mike, and his great-granddaughter, Eleanor.
James is also survived by his dear brother, Robert Cooney (Charlene). Beloved brother-in-law to James Carmody, Richard Carmody (LeeAnn), and Christine Denver (Gerard), and an adored uncle to many nieces and nephews.
James' kindness, generosity, and warm spirit touched everyone who knew him.
Reposing on Monday, October 28 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9:00 PM at Marine Park Funeral Home, 3024 Quentin Road, Brooklyn.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 29, at Good Shepherd R.C. Church, 1950 Batchelder Street, Brooklyn.
Following the service, James will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York, a fitting resting place for a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country and community.
