Obituary of John A. Scibilia
John A Scibilia, 93,of Brooklyn, New York, passed away in his sleep January 6, 2014 of congestive heart failure. He was born on 17th street in New York, New York on March 13, 1920, to Sicilian Immigrants, Antonio and Anna Maria Scibilia.He was married to his first wife Iris, from 1942 to 1963, and was re-married to Patricia in 1964. They were married until his passing.
John attended New Utrecht High school in Brooklyn, NY, and then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked in the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho. He joined the Army and fought in the Spearhead Third Armored Division under General Patton in WWII where he fought in many battles in France and Germany, including the D-Day invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes and the breakthrough at St. Lo.
Recipient of the Knight of Legion of Honor, John fought bravely during the war and rescued Brigadier General, Doyle Hickey. After the war, John served as a fireman and as armed security detail for the likes of the Marx Brothers, Howard Hughes and Rocky Marciano. He later became a letter carrier in Brooklyn, NY and school bus driver for Long Beach School District. He was a strong, hardworking man with an amazing work ethic, and retired at the age of 86.
His courage, optimism, smile, and dedication to family, remain inspirational. He defied the odds many times through sheer determination to live life to the fullest.
He was survived by his children, Susan, Annie, Dawn, Patricia, Ellen and Bill, as well as his grandchildren Michael John, Jason, Mikaela, Gianna, Luca, Ava, Joanna, Christine, Joseph, Jennifer, Jessica, Grace, Andrew, John, Michael, Craig, Hope, Joshua, Brenda and Frieda.
